活动概况
Field Trip Overview
5月29日至6月2日是深美首届高年级的支教活动。早上9点整,一行27位年轻的“老师”拎着行李坐上大巴,踏上了前往茂名化州市合江镇的支教旅程。
From May 29th to June 2nd, it was the first voluntary teaching activity for G8-G11SAISers. At 9 o"clock,a group of 27 young "teachers" got on the bus with their luggage and stepped on a journey toHejiang Town, Huazhou, Maoming.

我们的目的地是九仕坡宏育学校(以下简称宏育),一所拥有百年历史的公立乡镇学校,孩子的年龄跨度从幼儿园小班到六年级,平均每一个年级两个班。宏育虽然基础设施在合江镇算较完备的,但是由于地区的限制和资源的匮乏,宏育急需能让孩子全面发展的特色课程。
Our destination is Jiushipo Hongyu School (Hongyu), a public rural school with a history of over 100 years. The children"s age spans from kindergarten to G6, with an average of two classes in each grade. Although Hongyu has relatively complete facilities, due to therestrictions of the location and lack of resources, Hongyu needs special courses that allow children to develop comprehensively.

8到11年级的学生们根据自己擅长的领域分好了不同主题的教学组,包括辩论、地理、诗歌、 美术、飞盘、篮球,采用深美特色——PBL项目制进行教学,使每个课堂都是一个微型项目,为宏育带来了新奇的课程体验。
Students in G8 to G11are divided intogroups with different themes according to their areas of expertise, including debating, geography, poetry, art, frisbee, and basketball. They use the PBL, the characteristic teaching method of SAIS, so that each class becomes a micro-project, which brings a novel experience to the kids.

“到达茂名我才知道,蚊子并不是最大的敌人,高温和紫外线才是”

茂名的体感温度比深圳高一些,再加上紫外线非常强烈,即使是从宿舍走到教学楼短短七八十米的距离,“烹烤”般的夏炎也令人难以忍受。Matthew说,在没有空调的环境里,即使完全不动、不晒太阳,也会汗流浃背的,更何况还有紫外线的加持,在茂名五天流的汗比他在深圳一个月流的汗还要多。
The perceived temperature in Maoming is higher than that in Shenzhen. In addition, the UV rays are very strong. Even if it is a short distance of 70 to 80 meters from the dormitory to the classrooms, the summer heat is unbearable. Matthew said that in an environment without AC, even if you don"t move at all and not exposed to the sun, he would sitll sweat easily, not to mention the UV rays.

逼仄、昏暗、风扇吱吱呀呀地传递着茂名炎热的空气。——这就是当同学们首次走入教室,他们最真实的感受:不是所有的教室都是明亮宽敞、凉爽舒适的。
Narrowness, darkness, with creaking fans passing through the hot air of Maoming——This is what the students felt when they first entered the classroom: Not all classrooms are bright, spacious, cool and comfortable.

刚到宏育,有相当一部分孩子没法迅速适应当地的饮食,加上炎热的天气,食欲不振,大部分孩子直到第二天将近结束,才逐渐开始恢复正常饮食。
When they first arrived, a large number of students could not quickly adapt to the local diet. Coupled with the hot weather and loss of appetite, most of the children did not adapt until the end of the second day.

乡镇的夜晚蚊虫众多,孩子们来到宏育的第一次集体合作,就是合力用驱蚊水、开空调、减少熄灯后亮灯频率等方式,将宿舍的蚊虫“赶”了出去。
There were many mosquitoes at night. The first cooperation among our students was to "drive" the mosquitoes out of the dormitory by using repellent water, turning on the air conditioner, and reducing the frequency of turning on the lights after bedtime.
“无论是饮食还是环境,随行老师们都很少主动去为同学们解决问题,而更多的充当着保护者和观察者的角色,这个年纪的孩子们能独立解决相当多超出我们预期的麻烦!”
"Whether it"s diet or environment, instead of taking the initiative to solve problems for the students, we preferred to act as protectors and observers. Children of this age can independently solve quite a lot of troubles beyond our expectations!"

语言不通
Language Barrier
因为地处茂名市郊区,宏育的孩子普通话并不流利,更别提英语口语,所以对于一些非中文母语者的学生来说,教学的难度比想象中更大。
Because of the location, Hongyu"s students are not fluent in Mandarin, not to mention oral English, so for some students who are not native speakers of Chinese, teaching is more difficult than expected.

“在语言不通的情况下,如何改善表述方式从而让孩子们完整接收到我们想要传达的知识,是课程设计的一大难题。“

Simon是十一年级、英语母语的美籍男孩,在教学中,他比大部分的学生要付出更多的努力,通过肢体动作,和自己力所能及的中文水平,一遍一遍不厌其烦地重复一个知识点,直到宏育的孩子理解。在课后,为了拉进与自己学生之间的关系,他还准备了水枪和孩子们互动。
Simon is an American boy of G11. During teaching, he has to put in more effort than most of the other students. Through gestures and a little Chinese, he repeats a knowledge point over and over again, until the students understand. After class, in order to deepen the relationship with his students, he also prepared a water gun to interact with the children.

“即使我们的授课小组里成员众多,面对着50个学生的大班,一节课下来仍然口干舌燥。”

9年级的Luna上完了第一堂地理课之后陷入了迷茫:“我原以为我们来这里能够真正地传授他们一些知识,但是我发现时间太短,我想要去表达的东西又太多,那么我对于宏育的孩子们的作用究竟是什么呢?”
After Luna finished her first geography class, she fell into a confusion: "I thought we could really teach them some knowledge, but I found that the time is too short, and there are too many things I want to express. What is my effect to Hongyu students?"

在进行了四天的支教后,Luna自己寻找到了答案:
希望他们能通过我们的地理课对世界有一个基本的了解,从而激发他们对外面世界的向往。虽然我的能力暂时不允许我从根源上解决问题,但我还是想尝试启发他们对外界的思考。
After 4 days of teaching, Luna found the answer:
I hope they can have a basic understanding of the world through our geography class and stimulate their yearning for the outside world. Although I can"t solve the problem fundamentally, I still want to try to inspire their thoughts about outside.

面对这群孩子,我们究竟能改变什么?
Facing Hongyu children,
what exactly can we change?
其实我们都知道,五天四晚对于一场支教活动来说时间实在太短,即使我们的学生对于改变现状已经有了自己的一些想法,也很难全部付诸实践。那么这次支教的意义究竟是什么呢?——它是转瞬即逝的某个瞬间,击中宏育这群天真淳朴的孩子们心灵的一束微小的电流。
Actually, 5 days is too short a time for volunteer teaching. Even though our students have their thoughts about improving the current situation, it is still hard to realize. Then what is the significance of these 5 days? —— It is likea tinyelectric current thathits Hongyu"s children"s hearts in a fleeting moment.

哪怕我们的学生在这个夏天轻轻扇动的“蝴蝶翅膀”仅仅只是为孩子们在围墙上凿穿了一个细小的“孔”,但我们相信假以时日,看似坚不可摧、阻挡他们眼界的这座厚厚的围墙,会因为无数个这样微不足道的“孔”,轰然倒塌。
This summer, even the fluttering of their butterfly wings had only punched a tiny "hole" in the wall for the children, but we believe gradually the wall which blocks their visionswill crash down because of millions of these tiny "holes".

在宏育的孩子们的心中种植一个开拓眼界的想法——这就是本次支教对于这些他们最为重要的意义,而我们的学生们,完美地完成了这次支教的任务!
